After all, good safe roads provide for comfortable driving and travelling. Therefore together with its customers BASF develops asphalt additives that contribute to improved sustainability. They make road surfaces more durable, and they last longer before dangerous ruts and cracks begin to form.
The secret of the super-road is an elastic polymer that contains a flexible lattice which holds the asphalt together deep inside. The product, known as Butonal®, is added to the asphalt in small quantities, strengthening the properties of the bitumen through its cross-linking effect.
As a result, the road surface becomes markedly tougher and more resistant to weathering - and therefore safer.
