Here on Earth, solar cells supply not only environmentally friendly energy but also good heating and electric light. In satellites and other spacecraft, they also generate electric power for long voyages into outer space. The most important components of such solar cells are semiconductors that convert light into electricity by means of a photovoltaic process.
BASF develops, produces and supplies high-purity processing and cleaning chemicals. Without these chemicals semiconductors could not be manufactured with the requisite quality in the first place. After all, even the tiniest of dirt particles and impurities already render the miniature circuitry on the semiconductor crystals useless.
Thanks to this invisible contribution being made by BASF, the sun will continue to be an important alternative to the conventional sources of energy. Thus, nothing stands in the way of future travel into the unknown corners of the universe.
