First BASF Greater China Fine Chemicals Scholarship Award presented to university students in Shenyang

11/04

(November 11, 2004) Twenty-two students from Shenyang Pharmaceutical University and Shenyang Agricultural University became the first winners of "BASF Greater China Fine Chemicals Scholarships" presented at a ceremony today.

Established by BASF, the world’s leading chemical company, earlier this year, the scholarship aims to support and encourage outstanding graduates and undergraduates majoring in pharmacy, animal nutrition and veterinary science, in the pursuit of excellence in their respective expert fields. The scholarship program, which will become an annual event from this year onward, is initiated and sponsored by the Fine Chemicals Division of BASF.

During the ceremony, Mr. Hans-Joachim Rohe, Division Manager for Fine Chemicals, BASF (China) Co. Ltd., and General Manager of BASF Vitamins Co. Ltd., located in Shenyang, presented the scholarships to the students. He said: "The challenges of the world today are to be solved by ambitious, creative and innovative minds. These are not only found in companies like BASF, who take innovations seriously, but also at these two universities, both of which have glorious histories, substantial research results and sound academic culture."

"I am confident that our partnership with the two universities today will enable both sides to contribute more to scientific and social needs. This initiative demonstrates that BASF is committed to the principle of sustainable development. We are not only investing in Shenyang by setting up the joint venture - BASF Vitamin Co. Ltd. - in 1995, but also we are reaching out to academic institutions, which will in turn benefit the development of the whole community," added Mr. Rohe.

Following the awards ceremony, industry seminars were held in the two universities, introducing BASF’s latest development in the areas of pharmacy, animal nutrition and veterinary science.
