BASF becomes one of the founding members of CBCSD |
01/04 |

The China Business Council for Sustainable Development (CBCSD) was launched in Beijing on January 16, 2004. Dr. Dietmar Nissen, President of BASF East Asia Regional Headquarters Ltd., together with other 11 founding member companies from both home and abroad, attended the grand inauguration ceremony. It demonstrated BASF’s commitment to participate in the sustainable growth together with its Chinese partners and customers in China. On the other hand, being a member of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), it also showed BASF's intention to share with its Chinese counterparts the best practices and experiences gained throughout the years about sustainable development.

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the China Enterprise Confederation (CEC) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development. Thus CBCSD was officially founded, with all members sharing the common commitment to maintain and promote sustainable development through environmental protection, corporate responsibility, economic growth and social equity.

Approved in October last year by the Ministry of Civil Affairs under the sponsorship of CEC, CBCSD is a partner of global organizations with a network of 45 national and regional business councils and partner organizations, involving some 1,000 business leaders from 170 companies in 20 major industrial sectors.
The CBCSD aims to encourage the Chinese business community to implement sustainable business practices in China by providing a forum for exchange and cooperation. It will encourage enterprises to take a leadership role in promoting sustainable development, provide inputs to the government to assist in policy development, and nurture closer cooperation, dialogue and exchange between business, government and all other organizations concerned with environment and sustainable development.

It will also work with the WBCSD on global sustainable development initiatives and programs.
The board's current 11 member organizations include Sinopec Corp, Shanghai Baosteel Group Corp, First Auto Works, China Ocean Shipping (Group) Company (COSCO), China International Maritime Container Group, China Enterprise Confederation, Shell Companies in China, BP China, BASF East Asia Regional Headquarters Ltd., Novozymes China, and Lafarge China. Representatives of all board members attended the signing ceremony. More companies are expected to attend in the near future.
