BASF Ulsan Plastics Site is Grand Prize winner of the "2003 Ulsan Environment Award"

12/03

BASF Company Ltd.’s Ulsan Plastics Site was selected as the winner of the Grand Prize of "2003 Ulsan Environment Award" on December 4.

Ulsan Environment Award is co-hosted by Ulsan City and Ulsan Local Public Prosecutors Office every year since 2002, praising contributors to the community environment. The prize-awarding ceremony was held at Family Culture Center in Ulsan on December 10.

BASF Company Ltd. was selected as the Grand Prize winner based on its constant investment and efforts for the establishment and operation of advanced environmental systems.

Chong-Kwang Kim, Chairman of BASF Company Ltd., said that the prize means BASF is regarded as a real community member, contributing to the substantial development of the community.
He also noted that it was an honor to have BASF and its employees’ devotion recognized. Kim said, "All staff and employees have been engaged in environmental management with clear principles. And it is based on Sustainable Development, which BASF group is carrying prestige of. That’s the point."

Ulsan Plastics Site has maintained a nature-friendly environment; its wastewater recycle rate is more than 30% and it breeds pheasants and carp inside the factory grounds.

BASF Company Ltd., for the realization of Sustainable Development spirit, also decided that it would use the prize money that it won due to its environment-friendly management to help unfortunate neighbors. The 10 million KRW (approx. 7,000 Euro) prize was donated to ‘Ulsan Community Chest’.

The company has been also designated as "Environmentally Friendly Company" by the Ministry of Environment since last October, and the first BASF Kids Lab in Korea, which was held at the Ulsan Plastics Site from November 27 to 28, 2003, is one of BASF’s Sustainable Development programs for children and the local community as well.
