BASF inaugurates first charity run in Shanghai Chemical Industry Park for next Chinese generation
(July 23, 2003; Shanghai, China) More than 500 young amateur runners participated today when BASF, the world’s largest chemical company, inaugurated the first charity run in the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park (SCIP), with proceeds going to the betterment of China’s next generation.
The 500 runners raced along the 3-km scenic course at the perimeter of SCIP, and for every kilometer they finished, BASF donated RMB150 towards the future education and welfare of the next Chinese generation. The company contributed altogether RMB 225,000 in sweat, joy and good spirit to the Madam Song Foundation for the welfare of Chinese children as well as to the Shanghai Petro-chemical Academy for future education in the neighboring community.

The charity run was part of a milestone event -- the cornerstone-laying ceremony for a new BASF location, the world’s largest PolyTHF® production facility, which was held on the same date in the park.
Dr. Dietmar Nissen, President of BASF East Asia, kicked off the event and said, "It has always been BASF’s mission to care for local communities. The charity run is only one more example of our long list of community caring initiatives, We’ll continue to be a committed partner to China and a good corporate citizen."
BASF stands firm to the principle of sustainable development in its strategy to invest in the growing market of China. Profitable growth is one of the three major pillars leading to sustainability. Additionally, the company has been upholding environmental care and social responsibility to support sustainability.
Being the world’s largest PolyTHF® product facility, the scale of this project in Caojing will bring considerable economic advantages to the local community. In terms of new job creation, BASF will hire about 130 employees at the PolyTHF® facility, in addition to another 500 newly created positions in various auxiliary services in the local community in support of its operations.
"Our choice of setting up the PolyTHF® plant in Shanghai is a vote of confidence in Shanghai and in the future of China. The Shanghai Chemical Industry Park exemplifies the commitment of the Chinese government and Shanghai Municipality to work hand in hand with foreign investors like us. By realizing a chemical park of international standards with world-class infrastructure facilities, we can focus on our core competency of chemical production. We are proud to be a major investor in Shanghai and to be in the heart of China’s textile industry," concluded Dr. Nissen.
