Partnership with Africa honored

On June 20, BASF received the Federation of German Industry (BDI) Award for the Environment in Berlin. In the category "Technology transfer to Developing Countries", BASF received the award for a partnership project with the UN organizations UNEP (UN Environment Program) and UNIDO (UN Industrial Development Organization) to extend the use of the eco-efficiency analysis in African textile dyeing companies. BASF contributed its eco-efficiency know-how and long experience with textile products. UNIDO and UNEP have extensive experience with cooperative projects and are networked with the local companies. As a result, small and medium-sized enterprises in Africa can use the software developed by BASF – the eco-efficiency manager – to analyze their work processes and products to identify areas for economic and ecological improvement. Improvements in production processes have already been achieved in pilot projects in Morocco. A workshop held in Egypt in Spring 2006 offered BASF the opportunity to establish contact with potential customers. This BASF project had already been nominated by the European Commission for the European Business Award for the Environment.

European CSR Alliance launched

On March 22, 2006 in the presence of representatives of the economy from throughout Europe, Vice President of the European Commission Günter Verheugen and Commissioner for Social Affairs Vladimir Spidla publicly launched the "European Alliance for Competitive and Sustainable Enterprises" in Brussels. The new alliance, which is based on pro-active and voluntary participation and promotes flexible concepts, was preceded by several years of discussions. Non-governmental organizations are meanwhile criticizing the European Commission's new approach of not regulating corporate social responsibility and are calling for a selective evaluation of entrepreneurial commitment. BASF supports the alliance goals of furthering social responsibility among European enterprises and of uniting new or existing CSR initiatives of large corporations, small and medium-sized enterprises and their stakeholders under one umbrella.

Customer preference: eco-efficient fish feed production

In view of the continuing worldwide growth in the demand for fish and fish products, sustainability is becoming an important issue both in the use of natural resources and in aquaculture production. A customer project conducted by Expert Services Sustainability (ESS), in which BASF also offers its sustainability expertise to customers, was able to show a Norwegian salmon feed producer how to apply the eco-efficiency analysis in adopting a sustainable approach to production: a comparison of different commercial feed mixtures revealed that the fish-based feed content can be reduced to as little as 10 percent – making an important contribution to improving sustainability while maintaining good economic efficiency. Because many of the traditional fish feeds are themselves produced from fish products and their use promotes overfishing of the oceans. Responding to customers' requests, BASF has also developed an eco-efficiency manager which makes it possible to evaluate individual fish feed mixtures for their eco-efficiency via the internet.

Partnership project initiates waste disposal in Mexico

At a ceremony on February 20, a public-private-partnership project between BASF de Mexico, GTZ (German Technical Cooperation) and Altamira Municipality was signed. The goal of the project is to establish a waste management plan for the Mexican site community. One of the greatest challenges faced by the region where the BASF production site Altamira is situated, on the Gulf of Mexico, is the problem of waste. The waste management plan, which is scheduled for completion by October, will propose ways of reducing, and improving the handling and recycling of communal waste. In his speech, Michel Gaston Mertens, Managing Director of BASF in Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, emphasized the importance of the project as a pioneering initiative for the whole of Mexico and BASF's role in setting an example of responsible action in the field of sustainable development. This is further highlighted by the Initiative Responsible Care® Award conferred upon Altamira production site by the Mexican National Association of the Chemical Industry at the end of April 2006.
