Biodiversity

What is biodiversity? What is it all about?

Biodiversity - short for biological diversity - is a term used to describe the variety of all life forms on our planet. We distinguish between three different levels:
  • Diversity within species
  • Diversity between species
  • Diversity of ecosystems

The concept of biodiversity was first enshrined in law at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro. By now 191 countries signed the Convention on Biological Diversity (http://www.biodiv.org/default.aspx).

The three main aims are:
  • Conserving biological diversity
  • Using biological resources in a sustainable manner
  • The fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources

How does BASF contribute to biodiversity?

  • We continuously optimize our processes by implementing a wide variety of measures at our own production sites. In this way we contribute to energy efficiency, resource conservation and climate protection, reduce air and water emissions and avoid waste generation.
  • With innovative products and services we empower our customers to handle natural resources efficiently.
  • Resource conservation is an important element of our corporate strategy and our research and development activities.
  • We support environmental awareness and education programs.
  • We implement projects to encourage the protection of biodiversity at the local level.
In this way, BASF contributes to preserving and improving biodiversity and promotes the sustainable utilization of natural resources.
