What is biodiversity? What is it all about?
Biodiversity - short for biological diversity - is a term used to describe the variety of all life forms on our planet. We distinguish between three different levels:- Diversity within species
- Diversity between species
- Diversity of ecosystems
The concept of biodiversity was first enshrined in law at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro. By now 191 countries signed the Convention on Biological Diversity (http://www.biodiv.org/default.aspx). The three main aims are:- Conserving biological diversity
- Using biological resources in a sustainable manner
- The fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources
