Diversity as a competitive advantage

In all markets BASF is taking an active part in, we aim to be an attractive employer and to provide our customers with contacts used to dealing with diverse requirements. We therefore view diversity as a clear competitive edge in the global economy. By diversity we mean that all employees have the same opportunities at our company, regardless of their sex, nationality, educational background or cultural heritage.
We are convinced that diversity creates openness - to cultural and demographic changes within the company and to the needs and wishes of our customers. A diverse workforce is also more innovative: diverse cultural backgrounds, individual perspectives, experiences, ways of thinking and approaches help us to address challenges faster and more creatively.
We are recruiting the best specialists and managers worldwide, and we provide intercultural training programs to support the integration of employees from other countries.

We promote diversity - our goals
Our long-term goals are to increase the proportion of non-Germans and women among our senior executives. In 2006, the proportion of non-German senior executives was again around 30 percent. The proportion of women in top management positions is currently 5.6 percent.
We also aim to further increase the proportion of senior executives with international experience.
In the context of global competition, we see international experience as a central component of senior executive development. In 2006, this proportion was 71 percent compared to 64 percent in 2003.

Diversity in the global era
Project teams in the regions play an important part in promoting diversity. The teams have elaborated a range of measures we are now in the process of integrating into management and individual development processes.
BASF Brazil, for example, has established a Diversity Committee. Initial actions have already been successfully launched: employee recruitment selection procedures have been reviewed and modified, workshops for management staff and community initiatives have been organized and a special diversity guide for executives has been prepared.
