Organization ensures sustainable business activities |

The notion of sustainability can only be effective if it is firmly integrated into organizational and management systems. We have therefore created structures to promote sustainable business activities - from strategic planning to implementation.

Sustainability Council develops strategies
The Sustainability Council chaired by Board member and Industrial Relations Director Dr. Harald Schwager will in future ensure that BASF Group policy is in accord with the principle of sustainability. The key task of this committee - whose members include nine presidents working in sustainability relevant fields in addition to Schwager - will be to draw up strategies for the three aspects of sustainable development: the economy, the environment and society.

International Steering Committees manage global implementation
In 2004, we began setting up regional networks in Asia, the Americas and Europe. These regional steering committees support the implementation of our sustainability organization in the various regions.

Project teams draw up concrete measures
Several project teams made up of employees from existing operating units liaise with and report to the Steering Committee. Their tasks include drawing up quantifiable indicators, developing and monitoring environmental and social standards and expanding our sustainability reporting.
Project team members remain in their operating units, which guarantees that all measures undertaken are geared to everyday reality at BASF.

Sustainability Center coordinates internal projects and Stakeholder Dialogue
The Sustainability Center is the central coordinating body between the Sustainability Council, the Regional Steering Committees, the project teams, operating units and sites. Besides coordinating in-house projects and teams, the Sustainability Center is also responsible for external cooperation with environmental groups, industry associations, initiatives such as the United Nations' Global Compact and rating agencies.
