For BASF, nanotechnology is an area of great opportunities. It offers us the possibility to selectively modify material properties as the basis for developing innovative and successful solutions. In the period up to 2008 BASF is investing €180 million in research and development alone. Our aim is also to promote an objective public debate on nanotechnology with its opportunities and risks. |

As a company, we are part of society and we fulfill our social and environmental responsibility in our spheres of influence. |

REACH is an important and necessary reform of European chemicals legislation. BASF actively supports the European Commission and other stakeholders in fashioning a regulation that can be implemented. |

The protection of human health has priority for us. Physicians and toxicologists at BASF are working together with representatives from science, the authorities and consumer associations in numerous expert bodies on the question how we can further improve this protection. |

Since the 1992 Climate Framework Convention of Rio, the German chemical industry has worked for effective climate protection using voluntary mechanisms. BASF can point to major successes in the way that it conserves resources in handling energy and in the reduction of greenhouse gases. |

BASF is showing consistent commitment to using valuable fossil raw materials and sources of energy as efficiently as possible. Less than five percent of fossil raw materials go into material use by the chemical industry. Nevertheless, we promote the use of renewable raw materials for producing chemical products wherever it is possible and reasonable. |

 |
Biotechnology enables food products and valuable ingredients to be produced in ways which save resources. Utilizing biotechnology, we carefully weigh up opportunities and risks and make safety our top priority. |

One of the tasks of the political process is to shape the basic conditions for how companies operate. Ultimately, this also determines their success. Our key message to politicians is that they ensure that these conditions promote competitiveness and innovation because BASF and its customers need to be competitive and innovative in order to remain successful. |
