BASF Coatings developed the color Electric Orange for the Ford Focus ST in close cooperation with Ford. The partnership is beneficial for both parties: orders for the new orange Ford Focus ST have far exceeded the manufacturer's forecasts.
The partnership with Ford creates many ideas that BASF develops and systematically implements together with the customer: Ford was looking for a paint for the Ford Focus ST that would attract a great deal of attention and have a high recognition factor. To ensure the Focus ST's unique appearance, BASF Coatings' paint specialists together with Ford developed the brilliant color "Electric Orange" in close coordination.
BASF Coatings developed a complex finishing process in its labs that guarantees that the color will stay brilliant for a long time. Compared to conventional paint application, during the application of Electric Orange Metallic, an additional layer of special-effect paint is applied to the basecoat, which gives the orange its characteristic brilliance and preserves it. The special coating process involved an intermediate step that usually requires extra space, which was not however available. Only close teamwork with Ford made it possible to solve this problem under existing technical conditions and at minimal cost.
In 2006, BASF Coatings was Ford's only paint supplier to receive three Gold World Excellence Awards, joining its "Aligned Business Framework" of preferred global suppliers. The close cooperation with Ford is an example of BASF’s tailored solutions that make our customers more successful.
