BASF Visual - Biotechnology

White biotechnology - also termed industrial biotechnology - uses micro-organisms and enzymes to produce chemical products. New biotechnological methods and processes contribute to producing these products more efficiently and consuming fewer resources than some conventional processes.

White biotechnology - The best laboratory is nature

As a result of their potential in the production of high quality products, white biotechnology is an economically very interesting field of business. Biotechnologically produced products are used in human and animal nutrition as well as in the production of agricultural and pharmaceutical products.

What processes is white biotechnology based on?

In white biotechnology, a distinction is made between fermentative processes and enzymatic processes. In fermentation, the metabolic functions of living microorganisms are utilized. The organisms are "fed" with a raw material, and the finished product is obtained. In biocatalysis a single enzyme is used to catalyze only a specific reaction step. The enzymes employed generally originate from microorganisms.
