What advantages do the methods of white biotechnology offer?
In classical chemical synthesis, the desired substances are produced in many manufacturing steps. Instead, in white biotechnology we use fewer or even only a single biological process, e.g. fermentation with the aid of a microorganism. In this manner, the production is on the whole less complicated, more efficient and more effective.

What happens when microorganisms which have been modified by genetic engineering get into the environment?
In fermentive processes BASF only uses microorganisms of Biosafety Level 1 in closed systems. Microorganisms of Biosafety Level 1 do not represent any risk for people or the environment.
