Basotect® - Reducing weight at aircraft seats |

BASF Product: Basotect®
Description: Flexible, low-density melamine resin foam. A special process allows Basotect® to be used for cushioning in combination with other foam materials.
Development partner: JSO - a seat maker for the aircraft industry
Customer’s Product: Aircraft seats
Customer benefit: Basotect®’s density of less than 10 kilos per cubic metre means that cushioning can be made 50 percent lighter -70 percent for special comfort products- than that made from standard foams. Put another way, a kilogram in weight can be saved for each Economy-Class seat and up to four kilos for Business Class and First Class seats. For a 555-seater Airbus A380, that represents a weight saving of 600 kilos. The resulting saving in fuel recoups the cost of refitting an aircraft with Basotect® cushions in just two months. Cathay Pacific and Corsair will be the first to take off with these seats.
Benefit for BASF: JSO is now assessing the suitability of Basotect® for aircraft cabin insulation. Also, Basotect® allows for bigger sales opportunities beyond the known products within the automotive and construction industries. The use of Basotect® outside the aircraft industry may comprise seats for road and rail vehicles and the usage for the cushion and furniture industry as well as for cosmetics and hygiene markets. Manufacturers in the U.S. already use Basotect® in flame-proof mattresses.
